It is the third largest city in Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 231,000. Its cruise port is conveniently located a short distance from its major attraction the Norman style Duomo, with a Gothic portal, and magnificent bell tower with an astronomical clock.
As you leave the cruise terminal you can get a city map which contains a 17 stop suggested walking tour of this fascinating city. The stop at the Sacrario di Christo Re, a war memorial to Sicilian dead, there is a panoramic view of the area. At the Piazza Unita D'Italia there is a beautifully restored fountain featuring Neptune.
