"One of the first and most illustrious among French navigators, Jacques Cartier, who discovered Canada in 1535, today has his statue in his hometown of Saint-Malo. The Canadians had already raised him in 1889. , by national subscription, a commemorative monument at the very place where he accomplished his first wintering, on the Saint-Charles River. And, on the other hand, Mr. Mercier, Premier of Quebec, had placed in the cathedral of Saint-Malo an engraved plaque recalling the departure of Jacques Cartier for Canada.

In November 1904, the sculptor Georges Barreau was commissioned to produce it. The statue is melted by the Val d'Osne art foundry in Paris (workshop created in 1830 by Jean-Pierre-Victor André). On July 23, 1905, the unveiling of the statue on Place de la Hollande in Saint-Malo was presided over by René Brice, president of the general council, in the presence of a delegation of official representatives of Canada.

The Statue

H. 5.70 m in bronze, Cartier is represented at the helm of the Grande Hermine, scanning the horizon. The statue illustrates the lines of Théodore Botrel: "The bare forehead, braving storms, dressed in heavy animal skins, the boarding ax on his side, he listens under the stars, the breeze laughing in his sails and singing in his flag White".

Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier is a navigator, French explorer and writer through his travelogues. Born in 1491 in Saint-Malo, he died there on September 1, 1557.

Mandated by the King of France, François I, he approached the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1534 and explored the surrounding territory which he called Canada (from the Iroquois kanata, village). Author of maps, Cartier, through his Relations, is the first European to describe and name these waters, their shores and their inhabitants. He made a second trip in 1535-1536 and a third in 1541-1542. "

" L'un des premiers et des plus illustres parmi les navigateurs français, Jacques Cartier, qui découvrit le Canada en 1535, a aujourd'hui sa statue dans sa ville natale, à Saint-Malo. Les Canadiens lui avaient déjà élevé, en 1889, par souscription nationale, un monument commémoratif à l'endroit même où il accomplit son premier hivernage, sur la rivière Saint-Charles. Et, d'autre part, M. Mercier, premier ministre de Québec, avait fait placer dans la cathédrale de Saint-Malo une plaque gravée rappelant le départ de Jacques Cartier pour le Canada.

En novembre 1904, le sculpteur Georges Barreau est chargé de sa réalisation. La statue est fondue par la fonderie d'art du Val d'Osne à Paris (atelier créé en 1830 par Jean-Pierre-Victor André). Le 23 juillet 1905 l'inauguration de la statue, sur la place de la Hollande à Saint-Malo, est présidée par René Brice, président du conseil général, en présence d’une délégation de représentants officiels du Canada.

La Statue

La statue illustre les vers de Théodore Botrel : "Le front nu, bravant les tempêtes, vêtu de lourdes peau de bêtes, la hache d’abordage au flanc, il écoute sous les étoiles, la brise rire dans ses voiles et chanter dans son drapeau blanc".
