Alcatraz is the former site of a US fort, a federal penitentiary, and an "Indians of All Tribes" occupation.
Alcatraz Island is also the site of the first lighthouse on the West Coast.
The site now offers audio tours of the former working prison. A ferry (fee) must be taken to reach "the Rock." The Alcatraz Ferry departs near Pier 33.
The passport cancellation station had three stamps, and was located just outside the theatre on our visit.
For more information visit the official Alcatraz website, run by the NPS.
