Herzlich Willkommen an der Schleuse 100 in Bamberg !
Letzte der Schleusen des unter König Ludwig I. von 1836 – 1845 erbauten alten Ludwig-Main-Donau Kanals. Dieser verband auf 172 km die Donau bei Kelheim mit dem Main bei Bamberg und musste dabei einen Höhenunterschied von annähernd 200 Metern überwinden. Durch das nahezu gleichzeitige Aufkommen der Eisenbahn, der Unmenge an Schleusen, der tonnagebeschränkenden geringen Wassertiefe und dem aufwändigen Treideln vom Ufer aus, war dem Kanal kein langfristiger Erfolg beschieden, gleichwohl er ein bewundernswertes Stück Industriegeschichte schrieb. Die Schleuse 100 ist heute noch für Sportboote und Kanus aktiv und wird von Hand betrieben. Zudem hilft sie, den Wasserstand im linken Regnitzarm zu regulieren. Auch das idyllische Schleusenwärterhäuschen ist erhalten.

One of two activ locks in area of Bamberg, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany.
Last of the locks of the old Ludwig-Main-Danube Canal built under King Ludwig I from 1836 - 1845. It connected the Danube near Kelheim with the Main near Bamberg for 172 km and had to overcome a height difference of almost 200 metres. Due to the almost simultaneous emergence of the railway, the vast number of locks, the shallow water depth limiting tonnage and the costly towing from the bank, the canal was not a long-term success, even though it wrote an admirable piece of industrial history. The lock 100 is still active today for sport boats and canoes and is operated by hand. It also helps to regulate the water level in the left arm of the Regnitz. The idyllic lockkeeper's house has also been preserved.
