34 year old Mounted Constable Thomas Lonigan was one of four policemen that set off from Mansfield in search of the outlaw Kelly Gang. The infamous shoot out took place at Stringybark Creek 40kms north of Mansfield on October 26th 1878 when the outlaws surprised the police at their camp and in the ensuing battle three policemen were killed.
