FR Les fenêtres murées
Un impôts sur les portes et fenêtres a été mis en place en France par le Directoire, pendant la Révolution, le 4 frimaire an VII (24 novembre 1798).

Cet impôt fait partie des « quatre vieilles » contributions directes, avec la contribution foncière, la mobilière, et la contribution des patentes, toutes trois établies par l'assemblée constituante de 1789. La base de l'impôt était établie sur le nombre et la taille des portes et fenêtres qui donnaient sur la voie publique, sur les cours et sur les jardins des habitations et des usines, ainsi que sur les champs et les prés. Il ne touchait ainsi que les propriétaires, et introduisait une sorte de proportionnalité, les plus aisés payant également plus d'impôts.

Il ne touchait pas les ouvertures des bâtiments à vocation agricole, ni les ouvertures destinées à aérer les caves (soupiraux) ou pratiquées dans les toits (lucarnes, vasistas). Les bâtiments publics n’étaient pas imposés non plus.

Cet impôt fut accusé de pousser à la construction de logements insalubres, avec de très petites ouvertures, donc sombres et mal aérés, et il conduisit à la condamnation de nombreuses ouvertures, ainsi qu'à la destruction, par les propriétaires eux-mêmes, des meneaux qui partageaient certaines fenêtres en quatre, ce qui augmentait substantiellement l'impôt. Étaient aussi construites des fausses-fenêtres, sans ouverture pour échapper à l'impôt, avec parfois des dessins en trompe-l'œil5.

En 1926 cet impôts est supprimé mais de nombreux bâtiments français ont toujours des fenêtres condamnées.

Les fenêtres peintes
Avignon est une ville artistique dont le festival a une renommée internationale.

Réalisé par Marion Pochy et Dominique Durand, deux artistes plasticiens, chaque trompe-l’œil représente un temps fort du Festival d’Avignon depuis sa création en 1947 par Jean Vilar. Dans le cadre d’un projet initié en 1986, près de 70 fenêtres habillent la cité des Papes de son costume de scène. Certaines ont disparu, d’autres ont dû être restaurées. Les deux artistes ont publié un livre, en 2017, commémorant les 70 ans du fameux Festival de théâtre, regroupant l’ensemble des fenêtres et leurs emplacements dans la ville.
Figés éternellement dans des rôles célèbres, Daniel Auteuil, Gérard Philippe ou encore Jeanne Moreau font résonner des œuvres comme Lorenzaccio d’Alfred de Musset, Les fourberies de Scapin de Molière, ou bien Hamlet de Shakespeare.

EN Wall windows
A tax on doors and windows was introduced in France by the Directoire during the Revolution, on 4 February Year VII (24 November 1798).

This tax is one of the "four old" direct contributions, along with the land contribution, movable property, and the contribution of patents, all three established by the 1789 Constituent Assembly. The tax base was based on the number and size of doors and windows overlooking the public road, courtyards and gardens of houses and factories, as well as fields and meadows. It thus only affected owners, and introduced a kind of proportionality, with the wealthiest also paying more taxes.

It did not affect openings in agricultural buildings, nor openings intended to ventilate cellars (basement windows) or roof openings (dormers, skylights). Public buildings were not taxed either.

This tax was accused of pushing for the construction of unhealthy housing, with very small, therefore dark and poorly ventilated openings, and it led to the condemnation of many openings, as well as the destruction, by the owners themselves, of mullions that shared certain windows in four, which substantially increased the tax. False windows were also built, with no opening to avoid taxes, sometimes with trompe-l'oeil drawings5.

In 1926 this tax was abolished but many French buildings still have condemned windows.

Painted windows
Avignon is an artistic city whose festival is internationally renowned.

Directed by Marion Pochy and Dominique Durand, two visual artists, each trompe-l'oeil represents a highlight of the Festival d'Avignon since its creation in 1947 by Jean Vilar. As part of a project initiated in 1986, nearly 70 windows dress the city of the Popes with its stage costume. Some have disappeared, others have had to be restored. The two artists published a book in 2017 commemorating the 70th anniversary of the famous Theatre Festival, bringing together all the windows and their locations in the city.
Eternally fixed in famous roles, Daniel Auteuil, Gérard Philippe or Jeanne Moreau make works like Lorenzaccio by Alfred de Musset, Les fourberies by Scapin by Molière, or Hamlet by Shakespeare resonate.
