La mairie
Au 1er siècle de notre ère, Avignon est déjà une grande cité romaine dont le coeur se trouve ici : les thermes, un temple et le forum antique, avec sa curie.
Les têtes de l'empereur Tibères (14-37) et de son fils Drusus, mort en 23, découvertes lors des fouilles, sont exposées depuis au musée lapidaire.
Au XIVe siècle, les cardinaux se font construite un palais, la "livrée d'Albane", qui abrite ensuite le premier Hôtel de Ville. Il en subsiste la tour Jacquemart qui renferme les portraits sculptés et peints du cardinal Audouin Aubert et de son oncle, le pape Innocent VI.
La mairie actuelle date de 1851, et le théâtre doté d'une superbe salle à l'italienne qui reçoit en saison les passionnés de l'opéra de 1857.

Avignon
Avignon est une ville du Sud de la France, située au confluent du Rhône et de la Durance. C'est la ville où siège le conseil du Grand Avignon. Avignon est le chef-lieu de l'arrondissement d'Avignon et du département de Vaucluse. Ses habitants s'appellent les Avignonnais.
Par sa population, Avignon constitue la seizième aire urbaine de France et fait partie des villes moyennes, elle est la 45e ville de France sur les 34 970 villes du pays. Elle comptait 92 378 habitants lors du recensement de 2016.
Surnommée la « cité des papes » en raison de la présence des papes de 1309 à 1423, elle est actuellement la plus grande ville et la préfecture du département de Vaucluse.
C'est l'une des rares villes françaises à avoir conservé ses remparts et son centre historique, composé du palais des papes, de l'ensemble épiscopal, du rocher des Doms et du pont d’Avignon. Elle a été classée patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO sous les critères I, II et IV.
La renommée de son festival des arts du spectacle, véritable vitrine artistique et culturelle de la ville, a largement dépassé les frontières françaises. La ville fut capitale européenne de la culture en 2000.
Avignon comporte un cœur étudiant important, notamment grâce à son quartier étudiant (Agroparc) ainsi que de son université.

The town hall
In the 1st century AD, Avignon was already a great Roman city whose heart is located here: the thermal baths, a temple and the ancient forum, with its curia.
The heads of Emperor Tiberius (14-37) and his son Drusus, who died in 23, discovered during the excavations, have since been exhibited in the lapidary museum.
In the 14th century, the cardinals built a palace, the "Albane's livery", which later housed the first Town Hall. There is still the Jacquemart Tower, which contains sculpted and painted portraits of Cardinal Audouin Aubert and his uncle, Pope Innocent VI.
The current town hall dates back to 1851, and the theatre has a superb Italian-style auditorium which welcomes opera lovers in season.

Avignon

Nicknamed the "city of the popes" because of the presence of the popes from 1309 to 1423, it is currently the largest city and the prefecture of the department of Vaucluse.
It is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts and its historic centre, composed of the Popes' Palace, the Episcopal Complex, the Rock of the Doms and the Avignon Bridge. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria I, II and IV.
The reputation of its performing arts festival, a true artistic and cultural showcase of the city, has spread far beyond the French borders. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2000.
Avignon has an important student heart, thanks in particular to its student district (Agroparc) and its university.
