Voici le seul vestige du couvent des Augustins fondé en 1261 : le clocher de l'église de 1377. C'est une tour carrée surmontée d'une flèche en pierre et d'un campanile en fer forgé. La construction de l'église commencée en 1297, avait demandé des travaux colossaux !

J.-B. Joudou dans son Essai sur l'histoire de la ville d'Avignon raconte qu'on a prélevé tous les arbres de la place de la porte Matheron pour aménager la charpente ! Un chantier entièrement payé par le cardinal Pierre Corsini, intendant de Catherine de Médicis (Corsini reposait d'ailleurs dans le chœur du couvent)... Le clocher date donc de 1377. Mais de quand date sa transformation en horloge ?

En 1497, les habitants du quartier se plaignaient de ne pas entendre les heures sonner au beffroi de l'hôtel-de-ville. Comme la ville faisait la sourde oreille, tout le monde paya de sa poche une horloge publique pour mettre sur la tour du couvent ! Mais comme la cloche mise en place ne satisfaisait pas encore ces messieurs dames, il a fallu la remplacer par une nouvelle, plus grosse.

C'est à ce moment que la petite flèche en pierre qui surmontait le clocher a sauté, laissant la place à l'actuel campanile en fer forgé. Le couvent et l'église ont été démolis au moment des Massacres de Septembre, en 1792. Mais pas touche au clocher ! Il domine ainsi toujours fièrement les rues paisibles d'Avignon.

J.-B. Joudou in his Essay on the History of the City of Avignon tells us that all the trees in the square of the Matheron Gate were removed to create the framework! But when did it turn into a clock?

In 1497, the inhabitants of the district complained that they did not hear the hours ringing at the belfry of the town hall. As the city turned a deaf ear, everyone paid with their pockets for a public clock to put on the convent tower! But since the bell that was placed did not yet satisfy these ladies and gentlemen, it had to be replaced by a new, larger one.

It was at this moment that the small stone spire that surmounted the bell tower jumped, leaving the place to the current wrought-iron bell tower. The convent and church were demolished during the September Massacres in 1792. But don't touch the bell tower! He still proudly dominates the peaceful streets of Avignon.
