Following State Street in Bellingham, the State of the Solar System is a fully scaled model of our solar system. At 1:1,826,770,000 it runs 3/4 miles along the east side of State Street before looping back on the west side to the starting point near the Wharf Street Roundabout.

Working community volunteers, this project starts with a 30 inch Sun. From there, there is a hand-blown marble representing each planet in the proper scale.

This model of the solar system is great way to understand the sheer distance of the sun and planets. Interestingly at this scale "our nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is 14,130 miles or farther than the most distant place on our planet from Bellingham Washington."

Space and the universe is clearly one vast place.
