This beautiful black granite monument was dedicated on September 18, 2019, and the flagpole had actually been placed here earlier in the year. It is illuminated at night, with the United States Air Force Pararescue emblem on the front, featuring an angel holding a globe above "That others may live. A bronze plaque atop it reads:
Captain Mark Weber
USAF Combat Rescue Officer
KIA 15 March 2018 - Al Anbar Province, Iraq
"These things we do ... that others may live"
Isaiah 6:8; Revelation 21:4
Captain Weber grew up on this property. He graduated from nearby Guyer High School in 2007, and then attended the United States Air Force Academy. He graduated as a Second Lieutenant in 2011, becoming a contracting officer, but he felt the need to do more. He became a combat search and rescue officer after enduring "Superman School," perhaps the most rigorous training that the military can offer. During a rescue mission as part of the ongoing Operation Inherent Resolve, Captain Weber and six other servicemen were all killed on March 15, 2018 when their helicopter struck a power line near the Iraq-Syria border.
Please be careful around the heavy traffic in the area. Parking can be difficult -- there is a small driveway on the south side of FM 407, just to the east of the memorial -- and let's just say that the tenets of defensive driving are generally considered to be deprecated by area drivers.
