The festival began on Friday, August 15, 1969, and extended into the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 1969. During that time, thirty-one individual performers, blues, and rock and roll bands, including some of the most well-known and well-regarded performers of the era (and some newcomers whose careers received an immeasurable boost at Woodstock), played to an audience that was estimated at more than 450,000, most of whom camped on the site.
