The gray granite headstone of Charley L. Coe (9/20/1892 - 2/6/1923) stands in Lawnview Cemetery. Standing behind the headstone is a bronze plaque mounted on a metal pole. The plaque shows the front and back of the gold Carnegie Medal and the circumstances for which it was awarded. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission began awards in 1904, and the process continues today. The first awards were gold, silver or bronze, depending on the assessment of the heroic act, by the Commission. The LAST of the 19 gold medals awarded was to Charles Coe, which is commemorated here. The last of the 617 silver medal was awarded for an act in 1979.
The medal has a profile of Andrew Carnegie on the front. The reverse has an outline of the United States and Canada, with the seals of the two countries. The inscription plate at the center names the rescuer, the rescued, and the place and date of the heroic act. A verse from the New Testament encircles the outer edge: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Copies of this medal are shown on this bronze plaque. The plaque reads:
