The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary speaks of the changing community. When the land was aquried it was farmland. Today it is becoming a highrise community.

The land was purchased in 1947 from a farmer for $700. The Ukrainian community raised $3,500 for building materials and embarked on building the church with volunteer labour. The church was finally finished in 1955.
Over the years the church community expanded on the site adding a hall in 1962.
By 1998 the church was recognized by the City of Surrey as a heritage site and is now on the historic register.
The church continues to serve the Orthodox community of Surrey.
