Description of the Cave
The Bétharram Caves are the most beautiful in Europe and certainly the most curious to visit: they give to visitors, by their variety, the key to the formation of almost all the caves that are dead or in full activity.
The visited part of the caves extends over 2.8 km with an impressive elevation of 80 m. The underground route of the river is 3.5 km.
The visitor enters the mountain through a natural orifice: the upper part includes vast rooms rich in concretions.
The chasm connects this floor to that of the river. The lower part follows a natural fault, witnessing the work of water.
The visitor goes out through an artificial tunnel dug from 1913 to 1924.
The Bétharram caves are located in two departments: one enters by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and one leaves it by the Hautes-Pyrénées.
Currently, visitors are welcomed on a large shaded car park with 500 places for passenger cars. A shuttle then ensures their routing to the entrance of the caves located 2 km higher.
After having made the visit, the little train that transports them, stops in front of a magnificent building built in 1924, one of the first ones of France in reinforced concrete.
In this hall, souvenirs, minerals, fossils and postcards are proposed to the appreciation of the visitor.
The underground circuit ends near the parking of cars and coaches.

Description de la Grotte
Les Grottes de Bétharram sont les plus belles d’Europe et certainement les plus curieuses à visiter : elles livrent aux visiteurs, par leur variété la clef de la formation de presque toutes les grottes mortes ou en pleine activité.
La partie visitée des grottes s’étend sur 2,8 km avec une impressionnante dénivellation de 80 m. Le parcours souterrain de la rivière est de 3,5 km.
Le visiteur pénètre dans la montagne par un orifice naturel : la partie supérieure comprend de vastes salles riches en concrétions.
Le gouffre relie cet étage à celui de la rivière. La partie inférieure suit une faille naturelle, témoin du travail de l’eau.
Le visiteur sort par un tunnel artificiel creusé de 1913 à 1924.
Les Grottes de Bétharram sont situées sur deux départements : on y entre par les Pyrénées-Atlantiques et on en ressort par les Hautes-Pyrénées.
Actuellement, les visiteurs sont accueillis sur un vaste parking ombragé de 500 places pour voitures de tourisme. Une navette assure ensuite leur acheminent à l’entrée des grottes située 2 km plus haut.
Après avoir effectué la visite, le petit train qui les transporte, s’arrête devant un magnifique bâtiment construit en 1924, un des tous premiers de France en béton armé.
Dans ce hall, des souvenirs, minéraux, fossiles et cartes postales sont proposés à l’appréciation du visiteur.
Le circuit souterrain se termine près du parking des voitures et des cars.
