Plaque Text:

Horse drawn milk delivery wagons such as this were used from the early 1800's until about 1946 to deliver milk to homes in U.S. cities. Most of the milk sold in those days were delivered daily to homes by the "milkman".

These wagons were pulled by a single horse. Some horses learned their route and knew when to start, stop, wait, and turn without being guided or spoken to.

Milk was packaged in glass quart, pint, and half pint bottles and handled in wood cases. It was not homogenized so the top one fourth of each bottle was cream and was usually shaken up to mix it before use.

The cases of glass bottles were something covered with chipped ice to keep the milk cold. For that reason, the floor is slatted to allow water from the ice to run through. Empty bottles from the previous day were picked up and returned to the dairy for re-use.

Many customers considered the milkman their friend and expected him to come in the back door of their home and put the day's delivery in the ice box.

This wagon was used by Wanzer Dairy in Chicago between 1916 and 1933. The Southland Corporation of Dallas acquired Wanzer Dairy in 1969 and in 1983 donated this wagon to the Southwest Dairy Museum.

This wagon has been re-named Cabells- which was also owned by the Southland Corporation, to honor one of the Southwest Dairies. Cabells operated from 1932-1990.
