"Ibrahim Pasa Mosque - in Platonos square near the bazaar in Medieval Town. The marble sign on the main entrance informs us that it was built in 1540- 1541 A.D. by Suleiman. Therefore, this mosque is the oldest one on Rhodes island. It consists of a large square building, with 12- side dome and two consecutive porches on the north side. The minaret is located on the northwest side of the mosque and it has an octagonal fountain."

The sign in Greek, English, and Turkish, reads -

MOSQUE OF IBRAHIM PASHA (1540)
This is the earliest built mosque in the
Old Town of Rhodes.

It was founded by
Pargali Ibrahim Pasha (1493-1536) ,
favourite of Ottoman sultan Suleiman Il
the Magnificent (‘Kanuni') on his way to
Egypt in 1525. The work was finished
in 1540 (Hijrah 947), four years after
the former favourite's execution; thus
the dedicatory inscription does not
mention his name, commemorating the
sultan alone.

The inscription refers to the fact that the
mosque stood on the Pilgrimage route
to Mecca (‘Hajj’), which in those times,
passed through Alexandria for Muslims
starting from Ottoman-held Europe and
Asia Minor.
