On Wednesday August 21, 2019 shortly before 10:30 p.m., a police officer was driving west in the outside lane of Hefner Road near Dorothy Drive when his vehicle collided with a bicycle, according to a news release. The bicyclist, identified as 47-year-old Max Krause, was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
On Hefner Road, Officer Garry Price was driving his patrol car. He and Krause were both headed west in the outside lane. Price was cresting a hill and did not see the cyclist.
Price’s patrol car hit the back of Krause’s bicycle, violently throwing the rider over the hood, into the windshield and onto Hefner Road.
Max Krause suffered severe damage to his head and spine. He was taken to a local hospital. Later, he had a stroke and doctors removed the breathing tube Friday night. He was later pronounced dead.
Police are investigating the incident and said speed does not appear to have been a factor.
The 28-year-old officer, who has 2 1/2 years of experience with the Oklahoma City Police Department, has been placed on paid administrative leave.
