NRHP Nomination Form

"The original portion of the building is 71'-5" on the main facade which faces south on Lee Street and is 64' deep. The concrete frame structure is faced with white limestone and red brick with the strong influence of the Neo-Classical Revival style being evidenced in the three principle facades. On the main or south facade there are three large stone arched openings, the center one serving as the entrance with a pedimented doorway set below the transom bar. The other two arched openings on the south facade and the two on each of the other main facades (east and west) have wood double hung sash below the transom. There is a rectangular window with flat brick arch with stone keystone on either side of each set of arched openings, above which is a panel of white marble set into a stone framed opening. Red brick has been used as the wall material where these rectangular openings occur. Window sashs, transoms and doors are wood. Dressed stone quoins of large proportion define the corners and the one story building is capped with a single stone cornice and parapet. The building has a metal hipped mansard roof.

Mention should be made that it was at the U.S. Post Office in Greenville, Texas that Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II enlisted on June 20, 1942. Murphy received 24 citations for bravery during his military service.

The building was vacated as a post office in 1970 and disposal of the building was approved in January, 1972. The City of Greenville plans to acquire the building for municipal use."
