This scenic overlook is reached from the end of Pilot Road Point on the northern side of the Tongaporutu River. Park carefully, there is no view at this point, you will have to climb the stile and walk the distance across the farm paddock to the edge of the sand dunes and cliffs. From here you are rewarded with a stunning coastal view of the Taranaki Coastline with Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) a perfect cone shaped volcano, clearly seen on a fine day. The crumbling grey papa and sandstone outcrops on the shoreline form the Three Sisters, which have now become two sisters since one of them collapsed but it will eventually be replaced by a new formation developing on the cliffs nearby. The coast is constantly being eroded by the pounding waves of the Tasman Sea. There are caves, rock stacks and cliff sculptures all along this coastline, forever changing.
There may be animals in the farm paddock, please keep clear of them and do not hassle them.
Access to view point: Turn down Pilot Road, which is on the seaward side of State Highway 3 north of the Tongaporutu Bridge. Drive to the end and climb the stile, walk across the grassy paddock to the cliff edge and look southwards across the river and along the coast. Bring your camera. Enjoy the view!
