Museum Automobile Welt Eisenach
In the year 1967 an exhibition pavilion at the Wartburgallee - directly at the B19 - was opened by the then Eisenach automobile factory and operated there until the year 1995.
At the end of the 1990s, the museum - thanks to the commitment of the association "Automobilbaumuseum e.V." - became a new owner, the city of Eisenach. This in order to keep and present these technical cultural assets in Eisenach for the long term.
As an alternative location, the idea came up to set up a museum on the site of the former Eisenach (AWE) automobile factory. In building O2 from 1936, in which until the closure of the plant in 1991, the AWE administration sat.
For the anniversary "100 Years of Automotive Engineering in Eisenach" 1998 the symbolic laying of the foundation stone for the new exhibition "automobile world eisenach" took place here. The museum with the new name was reopened on 4 June 2005.
Eisenach's history of automotive construction is documented here over 118 years. The exhibition is divided into different modules. On display are vehicles from Eisenach production, but also objects that are witnesses of the vehicle construction and the living conditions of the corresponding time.
On display are vehicles from all production periods such as one of the first Wartburg motor cars from 1899, the Dixi 3/15, the BMW 328, the EMW 327, the EMW 340 and series models from the Eisenach automobile factory (AWE) and an AWE racing sports car from the year 1956.
In addition, body studies of wood, prototypes and construction plans provide insight into vehicle development in Eisenach.
Nowadays there is a production plant for cars at Eisenach, owned by Opel, for producing the Opel Corsa.
