The Rittenhouse Elementary School was constructed in 1924 of Arizona red fired brick with transom windows and a boiler for heat, as needed. Eventually, restrooms were added and gas heat was provided. This was a dramatic improvement for the several families farming in the area whose children needed to move from a mule skinners cook shack into a formal school setting. The building remains as the San Tan Valley Historical Museum, reminding local residents of their agricultural heritage. It was listed on the Arizona Registery of Historical Places in 1990 and then on the National Register of Historical Places in 1998.
