On 3June, 1984 the Tall Ship Marquez was a participant in the Cutty Sark International Tall Ships Race between Bermuda and Nova Scotia. She carried a manifest of 28 crew and trainees.
Approximately 80 miles northeast of Bermuda she encountered a violent squall. Within seconds she took on water and rapidly sank. Only 8 were able to reach a lifeboat and were subsequently rescued.
