"Attributed to the abbey of Saint John near Chocques by a charter of Milon, bishop of Thérouanne, in 1142, the parish of Gonnehem built his church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, in the first half of the fifteenth century, on the site of an older sanctuary, dedicated according to the sources to Notre Dame or St Barnabé (patronal festival of the village).
The building is of the "hallekerque" type with three parallel naves; the whole is of Flamboyant Gothic style, with arches vaults supported by a series of sandstone columns. Certain architectural elements, in particular the sandstone hexagonal font, the northern pillar of the choir and some of the columns are however older, probably of the twelfth century; perhaps these elements come from the old sanctuary, or the parish church of Gonnehem, built previously according to tradition, verified by the existence of vestiges, in the sector of "helles".
The iconography is remarkable for a village church, in particular the numerous basques and keystones carved, the central nave retracing biblical scenes (earthly paradise, nativity, crucifixion, Christ with links ...)
The building, "miraculously" escaped the revolutionary turmoil, experienced in the nineteenth century important restorations: reconstruction in 1883 of the north collateral and creation of vaults in warheads collateral, installation of new neo-Gothic furniture - stucco altars , paneling and confessional - with corollary the disappearance of the previous furniture of which only a few remains remain (tabernacle, reliquary, pulpit, fragments of statuary ...).
In the summer of 1918, the German bombs cause desolation: stained glass windows, ruptured arches, pierced roof and disemboweled chapel, repairs will take years. The installation in 1934 of the last windows of Charles Lorin and the organ finally restored to the church its aspect of pre-war, almost preserved today. "

" Attribuée à l’abbaye Saint Jean des prés de Chocques par une charte de Milon, évêque de Thérouanne, en 1142, la paroisse de Gonnehem a construit son église, dédiée aux saints Pierre et Paul, dans la première moitié du XVe siècle, sur l’emplacement d’un sanctuaire plus ancien, dédié selon les sources à Notre Dame ou St Barnabé (fête patronale du village).
L’édifice est de type « hallekerque » à trois nefs parallèles ; l’ensemble est de style gothique flamboyant, à voûtes d’ogives soutenues par une série de colonnes de grès. Certains éléments architecturaux, en particulier le bénitier hexagonal en grès, le pilier Nord du chœur et une partie des colonnes sont cependant plus anciens, probablement du XIIe siècle ; peut-être ces éléments proviennent-ils de l’ancien sanctuaire, ou de l’église paroissiale de Gonnehem, édifiée précédemment selon la tradition, vérifiée par l’existence de vestiges, dans le secteur des « helles ».
L’iconographie est remarquable pour une église de village, en particulier les nombreux culots et clés de voûtes sculptés, la nef centrale retraçant des scènes bibliques (paradis terrestre, nativité, crucifixion, Christ aux liens…)
L’édifice, « miraculeusement » réchappé de la tourmente révolutionnaire, connut au XIXe siècle d’importantes restaurations : reconstruction en 1883 du collatéral nord et création des voûtes en ogives des collatéraux, installation d’un nouveau mobilier néo-gothique – autels en stuc, lambris et confessionnaux - avec pour corollaire la disparition du mobilier antérieur dont ne subsistent que quelques vestiges classés (tabernacle, reliquaire, chaire, fragments de statuaire…).
L’été 1918, les bombes allemandes causent la désolation : vitraux disparus, voûtes ébranlées, toiture percée et chapelle éventrée, les réparations prendront des années. L’installation en 1934 des derniers vitraux de Charles Lorin et de l’orgue restitua enfin à l’église son aspect d’avant guerre, quasiment conservé de nos jours. "
