Construction of the new courthouse, which cost approximately $4 million to build, began in August 2011 and wrapped up this fall (2012). The project was funded by a half-cent sales tax approved by Clark County voters. Whiston Construction of Canton, Mo., was the general contractor.
The two-story brick structure at 111 E. Court St. boasts nearly 27,000 square feet of space – twice the size of the old courthouse. Offices of the assessor, collector, treasurer, recorder, county clerk and commission are located on the first floor. The second floor houses associate and circuit courts, judges’ chambers and the circuit clerk’s office. The county prosecuting attorney’s office, the University of Missouri Extension Office, and space for county support organizations and storage can be found in the basement. Restrooms are available on all three levels.
An Oct. 3 dedication ceremony drew hundreds of spectators including county residents and state and local officials.
An invocation was given by the Rev. Jim Campbell. Courthouse Committee Chairman Shawn McAfee gave closing remarks and a benediction. Flags were raised and lowered by members of the American Legion, and the Clark County R-1 High School Marching Band played the national anthem.
