Many people think that community of Austinville was named for Stephen F. Austin, but the community was actually named for his father, Moses Austin who was an early settler of the area and was instrumental in the developement of local pioneer industry, which included the Lead Mines and the New River.
This historic marker stands on Route 52 some, five miles from the actual birthplace. All evidence of the actual birthplace has been destroyed, but there is a small park located near the birthplace on the bank of the New River. The coordinates for the park are:
