"Le crapouillot désigne, dans le vocabulaire des soldats français de la Première Guerre mondiale, un mortier de tranchée (tel que le mortier de 58 mm T N°2) français et par extension ses munitions, les torpilles d'artillerie. Ce terme signifie littéralement « petit crapaud », crapaud désignant l'affût d'un mortier. Le servant de ces pièces est appelé un crapouilloteur"

"The toad refers, in the vocabulary of French soldiers of the First World War, to a French trench mortar (such as the 58 mm T N°2 mortar) and by extension its ammunition, artillery torpedoes. This term literally means "small toad", a toad referring to the lookout for a mortar. The servant of these parts is called a toadmaker."
