"On May 16, 1940, obeying a sacrifice mission, 27 French soldiers lost their lives at Walcourt. The battle pitted the 8th German Infantry Division against groups of the 9th French Army. The French command post was established at City Hall while the 1st line hospital occupied the church. The 125th Infantry Regiment was then ordered to cover the retreat of the 9th Army... No civilian casualties were reported, but the French army was paying a heavy price.

The soldiers were buried near the Basilica, in the cloister courtyard, a space reserved for the religious people, and in the 1950s, their remains were repatriated except for one, that of the officer aspirant Vincent Dauchez, who was still buried in the French cemetery."
