Conning tower from the USS Flasher (SS 249) commissioned in 1943. The tower forms the focal point of the National Submarine Memorial in Groton. The Flasher was one of 77 Gato-class subs built for the USN. The Flasher saw service in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War. She was credited with over 21 sunken Japanese vessels, and over 100,000 tons of shipping. She received the Presidential Unit Citation and six battle stars.
At war's end the Flasher was sent to New London, CT and placed in reserve. She was paid off in 1959 and sold for scrap. However, in 1963 the conning tower was salvaged and placed at the entrance to the naval housing unit in New London. It then was donated to the new National Submarine Memorial in Groton.
