The 17th Airborne Division was activated in 1943. However, it was not immediately sent into combat, but remained in the US to complete training. It was finally sent to Europe, but as an Airborne Infantry Division, after Operation Overlord (D-Day).
As such it saw action during the Battle of the Bulge, during the Rhineland campaign, and in Central Europe.
The Division's soldiers earned 4 Medals of Honor.
Following the ended of European hostilities the Division was broken up, with elements assigned to the 82nd Airborne in occupation duties, and the 13th Airborne, which was preparing for the invasion of Japan.
The Division was subsequently deactivated in September, 1945.
The Division suffered at total of 6,745 casualties, including 1,191 Killed in Action.
The monument in located in Section 33, along McClellan Drive, just north of McClellan Gate.
