The foundation stone for the Victorian eclectic style basalt and limestone former Shire Hall was laid on May 29th 1878 and the building opened on October 30th. The Hall features a single storey of squared, rockfaced, basalt with a prominent central gabled portico and segmental arched arcade. Waurn Ponds limestone was used for the Corinthian columns and arcade .
The Shire of Meredith united with the Shire of Bannockburn in 1915 and the municipal offices were transferred to Bannockburn.
