Deer Mound is one of the local high points of land. It was the location of a forestry tower for the Cooking Lake Forest Reserve. This was the first such forest reserve in Canada, set aside in 1892 and formally established in 1899. In 1915 the forest reserve consisted of approximately 7000 hectares, eventually becoming the Cooking Lake - Blackfoot Grazing and Provincial Recreation Area.
