Pleasant Valley Cemetery was the FIRST built between the Canadian Rivers, after the opening of Oklahoma in 1889.

Pleasant Valley Cemetery is located on the southeast corner of S.W. 59th Street and Council Road. This bronze plaque is mounted on a brick pedestal and serves as the entrance sign for the cemetery. The cemetery is nicely maintained and currently contains 2260 burials.

The bronze plaque reads:

Pleasant Valley Cemetery
The first cemetery and church
established between the Canadian Rivers,
after the opening of Oklahoma in 1889,
was Pleasant Valley.

J.T. Lawson donated the use of 1/2 acre of
his homestead for the first three years,
until patent was granted, then gave deed
for same and sold additional 1-1/2 acres to
Cemetery Association for $25.00. Association
organized in 1892.

A brush arbor was used until the church was
built in 1890. First minister Rev. B.J. Hartsfield
was buried here Dec. 6, 1899. Church was moved
to Benton when railroad was built in 1903.
Benton was later renamed Wheatland.
