A sizeable, sturdy gazebo is perched in a grassy plat surrounded by acres of paved parking on The Crossing at Smithfield shopping plaza premises. This spot on the northern Rhode Island commercial property was, at one time, intended for family events as well as decoration.
The white post and beam structure has a span of at least 20 feet, with entrances at the east and west bases and a wood-topped rail of square white balusters around the remaining six sides. The concrete floor is slightly raised above the gently sloping grade; higher on the east than the west to make a level floor. This low base is finished with a stone veneer in varied earth tones. The open ceiling shows off the geometry of its unpainted wood rafters and planks. A glass and metal single lamp chandelier hangs by a chain in the center. Gray shingles cover the multi-sloped roof. A transom cupola, also trimmed in white with gray shingles, supports a modest weather vane.
