The ballpark is named for Jerry Hodge, a long-time Amarillo resident, former mayor, and mover and shaker who was instrumental in bringing professional baseball back to Amarillo. The "town" part of the name is a nod to the formation of one large community from multiple prairie dog -- sod poodle -- colonies. With some Art Deco details that are a nod to the Santa Fe Building and Potter County Courthouse downtown, it covers 9.3 acres, with a lot of open space and real grass field that is probably a maintenance chore under the hot, unforgiving Texas sun. The fences are at 325 feet in right and left fields, 400 ft in center field.
They've got the concessions that you would expect, although not nearly all the fancy stuff (like a good selection of craft beer) that you're going to find at the major league stadiums. You'll be able to get a hot dog and a decent beer, rest assured. The 352 Club is out in left field, 352 feet from home plate, worth a look. If you need free wi-fi, they have it, and the signal is actually pretty good.
Visitors should check the team's website (see below) for a listing of promotions, which include group events, special discounts for the kids in their "Sod Pups Club", "Bark in the Park" nights where you can bring Fido, and stadium tours.
