79C606 is monumented in the west sidewalk of the Canoe River Bridge about 7.5 kilometres south of Valemount. The benchmark appears to have been sandblasted by all the road sand and possibly even snow plow blades which have passed over it since 1979. Benchmarks in abutments along the highway remain in much better condition than this one.
Nearby, at a large highway pullout, is a
British Columbia Stop of Interest marker which relates the sad tale of British Columbia's deadliest train disaster, the
Canoe River Tragedy. Nearby, on November 21, 1950, two trains collided killing 21 persons, 17 Canadian soldiers on their way to fight in the Korean War, and 4 train engineers.
