Doug Cottrell was an active citizen of Fletcher, serving on the City Council and as a volunteer firefighter. He was employed by TDS Telecom, who donated this sculpture and memorial to Doug which stands in front of the fire department he served.

The sculpture is metal and shows a firefighter in uniform holding an axe. The metal plaque mounted on a pole has the firefighting cross, and the words:
