The Göttingen Seven were a group of Göttingen professors who protested in 1837 against the abolition of the liberal constitution introduced in 1833 in the Kingdom of Hanover. The seven professors were therefore dismissed; three of them were expelled.

The names of these seven professors at Georg-August-Universität were:

Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht, constitutional lawyer
Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann, Historian
Heinrich Ewald, Orientalist
Georg Gottfried Gervinus, literary historian
Jacob Grimm, lawyer and German scholar, and his brother
Wilhelm Grimm, Law Scholar and Germanist
Wilhelm Eduard Weber, Physicist

After the 123-year personal union between Great Britain and Hanover had ended, Ernst August I ascended the throne in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1837. Immediately after his accession to power, he revoked the relatively liberal constitution, the constitutional state law that had entered into force four years earlier, on November 1, 1837. On November 18 of that year, the Göttingen Seven submitted a written protest.
On 12 December 1837 Ernst August I dismissed the professors and expelled three of them - Friedrich Dahlmann, Jacob Grimm and Georg Gottfried Gervinus - from the country.
The Protestation, the Protest Letter, spread throughout the German Confederation and promoted a liberal attitude.

On November 19, 2015, a memorial to the Seven of Göttingen was unveiled on the forecourt of Göttingen Station, a memorial that had previously been the subject of much controversy. It consists of a replica of the pedestal of the Ernst August Memorial at Hannover Main Station. The equestrian figure of the king is missing. "The father of the country his Göttinger seven" stands on one side. The name of the artist Christiane Möbus stands under the names of the seven professors on the other side of the pedestal.
