[FR] La ville est mentionnée comme Ceromannos au ve siècle, Ceromannis au vie siècle, réduit à *Celmans, forme déduite d’après la mention in pago Celmannico en 765,. On trouve aussi des formes du type Clemanes dans la Vita de saint Maximin au (viie siècle), puis « Hlemanes » au ixe siècle, enfin Lemanes. La première mention en tant que Mans date du xiie siècle, dans le Roman de Rou ; Prez del Mans. Une charte de 1264 réserve même toute une partie à la cité avec son Chapitre dou Mans. Le remplacement de la syllabe ce- par l'article « le » a eu lieu au xiie siècle, lorsque ce- a été assimilé à l'adjectif démonstratif « ce ».
[EN] The Cenomani or Aulerci Cenomani were a Celtic people, a branch of the Aulerci in Gallia Celtica, whose territory corresponded generally to Maine in the modern départment of Sarthe, west of the Carnutes between the Seine and the Loire. Their chief town was Vindinum or Suindinum (corrupted into 'Subdinnum'), afterwards Civitas Cenomanorum (whence Le Mans, and much later the Cenomanian geological age) and later Cenomani as in the Notitia Dignitatum, the original name of the town, as usual in the case of Gallic cities, being replaced by that of the people.
