In the military he spelled his last name Wortick. He is buried as Wertick. He was born on November 20, 1837 and died on April 7, 1910 in Leon, KS.
His Medal of Honor information and citation is: WORTICK (WERTICK), JOSEPH
• Rank and organization: Private, Company A, 8th Missouri Infantry
• Place and date: At Vicksburg, Miss., 22 May 1863
• Entered service at: Hannibal, Mo.
• Date of issue: 14 July 1894
Citation: Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming party."
