Every Day A Busy One For Police Dispatcher
"The work of a police dispatcher is not easy. It requires patience, the ability to do 10 things at one time and listen to several conversations at once and respond to each. Mrs. Blanche Thompson is the afternoon dispatcher for the Deer Park Police Department. In addition to dispatching, she is receptionist, issues licenses to for bikes and dogs, monitors the prisoners, handles logs, works the teletype and answers all after-Five calls to the city. "When I was training for the job five years ago," said Mrs. Thompson, "I told myself I could not possibly hear all incoming calls and handle the other duties at one time." However, once behind the desk, Mrs. .Thompson found that it was not as overwhelming as she thought. She does admit that it requires a very clam person to handle the responsibilities. Because it is a desk job, the dispatcher does not have to attend the police academy to qualify. The work is exclusive of city beats and traffic detail."
