Description:
Red with a white jacoba jug in the middle, chained and ornamented yellow and above it a yellow crown of three leaves and two pearls, one at the height of four fifths of the flag height.
The story behind this flag:
In the distant past there was a form of piracy for which the rights could be purchased from, for example, a city.
This form of piracy was called "kaping". The "kapers" had to pay a large part of the proceeds to those whose rights had been purchased.
"Kapers" did not use a black flag like pirates but a red flag. To show who they were, the "kapers" of Vlissingen used a white porcelain jug, the Jacoba jug.
Many places in the world still recall "kaperij", for example "Kaap de Goede Hoop" in South-Africa.
