Dorimène Desjardins est aujourd’hui reconnue comme la cofondatrice des caisses populaires, l’une des principales coopératives financières du Canada. Collaboratrice intime de son mari Alphonse Desjardins, elle joue un rôle clé dans l’implantation de la première caisse populaire, fondée à Lévis, dont elle assure la gérance de 1903 à 1906. Devenue veuve en 1920, elle use alors de son autorité morale auprès des gérants des caisses Desjardins pour orienter leur développement conformément à la vision de son mari. Cette coopératrice convaincue rappelle l’apport de toutes les femmes qui, dans l’ombre, ont œuvré au succès d’une entreprise.

Dorimène Desjardins is today recognized as the co-founder of the caisses populaires, one of Canada’s most important co-operative financial movements. Together with her husband, Alphonse Desjardins, she played a key role in establishing the first caisse here in Lévis, which she managed unofficially from 1903 to 1906. Widowed in 1920, she exercised moral authority over the managers of the various Desjardins caisses to ensure that they evolved in accordance with her husband’s vision. This champion of co-operative values exemplifies the contribution of many women who, from behind the scenes, were instrumental to the success of a business.
