" Sur la même place Saint Pierre où se trouvent l'église paroissiale et le prieuré , la chapelle des Pénitents de Pont Saint Esprit a bénéficié d'une belle rénovation.
Elle date des années 1650 et abritait les pénitents, regroupant les anciennes confréries de pénitents blancs, bleus et noirs, qui assistaient les familles lors d'un deuil par exemple.
La satue de la niche rappelle qu'elle est située sous la protection de Saint Jean Baptiste. Pendant la Révolution, elle devint salle de réunion pour le club révolutionnaire qui y fit peindre "l'arbre de la Liberté sur la montagne".
Au XIXè, les pénitents retrouvant leur bien y ajoutèrent la statue de la Vierge et son couronnement.
Depuis 2012 elle abrite le nouveau théâtre "La scène - chapelle des Pénitents" intercommunal. "
