Given the long stretch of road that leads into the park, essentially surrounded by water (after all the name of the park literally means "almost an island"), it's no surprise to learn that turtle mortality rates along the roadway were high.
According to an info sign located near the park store, two turtle passageways were installed beneath the roadway in December of 2015. They are located between the park store and the campground office. Roadside fencing was also installed to guide turtles to the tunnels and away from the roadway. The sign also states that the tunnels could also be used by other wildlife such as frogs, snakes, salamanders and small mammals.
This waymark is for the tunnel closest to the park store. The two tunnels are separated by at least 200 meters.
