Memorial plate to Josef Ritter von Gadolla in the northern arcades of Friedenstein Castle in Gotha.
Josef Ritter von Gadolla (* 14 January 1897 in Graz; † 5 April 1945 in Weimar) was an Austrian-German officer. As "combat commander" of Gotha in Thuringia, he ensured at the end of the Second World War that the city was spared extensive destruction.
The explanatory plaque says (translated):
On April 4, 1945, Josef Rifter von Gadolla, as Gotha's site elder, assumed responsibility for the transfer of the city to the Allies without a struggle. He was arrested on the same day and sentenced to death. The sentence was executed in Weimar. Gadolla's courageous actions saved thousands of people and the city of Gotha from extermination.
In May 2018 he was named an honorary citizen of Gotha.
