[EN] "In the nineteenth century, the only way to cross the Charente between Rochefort and Échillais, is the ferry. This crossing system is limited to low tide or in case of adverse weather conditions and currents too strong.
The construction of a bridge is then considered in order to replace the ferry which can no longer respond to a traffic increasingly important.
The challenge is to find a bridge system that allows the crossing of people without hindering shipping, including the ships of Arsenal Rochefort.

It is the proposed Transporter Bridge proposed by Ferdinand Arnodin which is retained in 1897.
Work begins in March 1898 and ends 27 months later. The Transporter Bridge Martrou was inaugurated on July 29, 1900. "

"The ferry bridge of Martrou is a metal work of art allowing to connect the two banks of the Charente, between the towns of Rochefort and Echillais, without hindering the navigation of the cargo ships which serve the ports of Rochefort and Tonnay-Charente This is the last transhipment bridge existing in France.
