Ce n’est qu’après la chute de Robespierre (28 Juillet 1794) que la Convention se vit obligée de libérer ceux qui restaient : 282 ! à partir du 5 février 1795. Les supplices qui amenèrent rapidement leur mort, les vertus dont ils donnèrent l’exemple en souffrant pour leur foi, ont permis de les considérer comme martyrs. Le 1er octobre 1995, Jean-Paul II, béatifiait 64 d’entre eux, ceux pour lesquels on avait pu réunir suffisamment d’informations."
