Formerly bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, between Rochefort and the island of Oleron, the fortified city of Brouage has recently become part of the very exclusive club "Most Beautiful Villages of France". Nestled in the heart of a marsh that covers more than 3,000 hectares, the village enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. While walking on the hiking trails, you will certainly encounter herons, ducks and shorebirds such as the Harlequin Knight or the Northern Lapwing, but also white storks that have frequented the site since the late 1970s. A unique story ...
From the top of the ramparts that surround the city, we can see the village of Hiers, which was originally one of the many islands of the Gulf of Saintonge. Over the centuries, the gulf has filled and Hiers is now a peaceful village watching over the marsh. In the sixteenth century, the lord of the châtellenie of Hiers decided the construction of a new port for the salt trade. It is the creation of Brouage, which will soon be fortified by the best engineers of the kingdom of France: Pierre de Conti d'Argencourt then Vauban and Ferry. Today, the sea has withdrawn, but Brouage has managed to reconvert. With its ramparts more than two kilometers long, its oyster port, its designer shops and craftsmen and its many buildings steeped in history transformed into exhibition venues, it remains an ideal walking destination for any the family.

Bienvenue à Brouage !
Autrefois bordée par l’océan Atlantique, entre Rochefort et l’île d’Oléron, la cité fortifiée de Brouage fait depuis peu partie du club très fermé des « Plus Beaux Villages de France ». Blotti au cœur d’un marais qui s’étend sur plus de 3 000 hectares, le village bénéficie d’un climat agréable tout au long de l’année. En vous promenant sur les sentiers de randonnée, vous rencontrerez certainement des hérons, des canards et des limicoles comme le chevalier arlequin ou le vanneau huppé, mais également des cigognes blanches qui fréquentent le site depuis la fin des années 1970. Le bruit du vent dans les roseaux invite à la détente…

Une histoire unique ...
Du haut des remparts qui ceinturent la cité, on aperçoit le village de Hiers, qui était à l’origine l’une des nombreuses îles du golfe de Saintonge. Au fil des siècles, le golfe s’est comblé et Hiers est désormais un village paisible qui veille sur le marais. Au XVI° siècle, le seigneur de la châtellenie de Hiers décide la construction d’un nouveau port pour le commerce du sel. C’est la création de Brouage, qui sera bientôt fortifiée par les meilleurs ingénieurs du royaume de France : Pierre de Conti d’Argencourt puis Vauban et Ferry. Aujourd’hui, la mer s’est retirée, mais Brouage a réussi sa reconversion. Avec ses remparts de plus de deux kilomètres de long, son port ostréicole, ses boutiques de créateurs et d’artisans d’art et ses nombreux édifices chargés d’histoire transformés en lieux d’expositions, elle reste une destination de promenade idéale pour toute la famille.
