According to the NDSU Archives, West Acres Shopping Center opened August 2, 1972. Bill Schlossman, a Fargo businessman, started planning and building West Acres after his plan for a retail center in downtown Fargo was rejected by city leaders.

When West Acres Shopping Center opened it had 52 retailers, including Sears and deLendrecie’s. In 1973, Dayton’s opens its first store outside Minnesota at West Acres, and in 1979 J.C. Penney’s moved out of downtown Fargo to the mall.

William Guy held the office of Governor of North Dakota from 1961 until 1973. The Grand Forks Herald reported that Gov. Guy was a force behind the modernization of North Dakota during his years in office. Guy "brought dignity to North Dakota politics" through his "competence and professionalism." while working on the Garrison Diversion Project, the Interstate Highway system and development of coal and oil industry in North Dakota. Gov. Guy, it has been reported, felt the improvements at the State Hospital in Jamestown that help mental health patients live better and more productive lives.
