The protagonist Prior Walter is suffering from AIDS. His boyfriend Louis Ironson cannot deal Priors disease and leaves him for Joe Pitt, a closeted gay man.
In the final scene of the play, Prior and Louis along with Hannah, Joe's mother and Belize, Prior's ex-boyfriend and best friend, meet at the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. Prior recounts the Biblical story of the the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, where, according to the Gospel of John, the sick go to be healed ("an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had") and reaffirms his intention to live on to continue his work.
